Track Record

Selected engagements

Three examples of the scale and nature of the work behind the advisory, drawn from the founder's leadership career.

Organisational Design

Creating a global claims & demurrage network

Consolidated claims and demurrage handling into a single global entity for Shell Trading, with hubs in London and Singapore providing 24/7 coverage across regional offices worldwide. The work spanned process streamlining with local operating companies, team professionalisation, a single SAP finance system, and the migration of mid- and back-office activity to a shared service centre.

Founding an Organisation

Designing Qatar's energy marketing company

Member of the initial design team — and later the leadership team — of Qatar Energy Marketing Company (founded as Tasweeq), responsible for all shipping and freight policies: chartering, claims, demurrage and vetting. A rare blank-sheet opportunity to implement best-in-class methodology, alongside phased nationalisation of roles and a graduate recruitment programme.

Post-Merger Integration

Reorganising ship management after Shell–BG

Member of the impact assessment team following the Shell and BG combination — evaluating the maritime policies of both entities and delivering a unified, refreshed set. Redesigned the ship management function of 110 staff across five locations to deliver substantial savings, with organisation plans stress-tested against succession scenarios up to ten years ahead.

About the Founder

Forty years. One industry.

Vitrea Training & Consulting was founded in 2019 by Paul Veldhuizen, a highly experienced senior leader within the energy trading and maritime industry, with over 40 years' experience, mainly at Shell Trading and Shipping (STASCO).

Paul began his career in the early 1980s as a dual-certified marine officer. After obtaining an MSc in International Shipping from Plymouth University, he worked for STASCO in market analysis, tanker chartering, claims and demurrage, into LPG trading. He joined the fledgling Gas & Power organisation in 2002, becoming Global LNG Trading Operations lead and ending his career as Fleet Operations Manager.

This breadth of experience took him on overseas senior assignments in the Caribbean and the Middle East, as well as to executive board membership of various operating companies.

Upon leaving Shell in 2017, Paul revived his long-standing affiliation with learning and development, which included a stint as Academic Course Director in the UK. For the Cambridge Academy of Transport he created a five-day residential course — Anatomy of LNG Shipping and Operations — delivered in the UK, Singapore and Dubai.

Paul continues to engage as Course Director with a broad span of eminent learning providers in the global maritime and commodity trading world: energyEDGE, Informa Connect and its sister company Lloyd's Maritime Academy, and Lloyd's Register (LR).

Past clients include the Panama Canal Authority, Concord Shipping (Mozambique), Capstone ITS, Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, the Malaysian Port Authority, KOGAS, and LNG terminals such as Dragon LNG (Petronas Trading) and Freeport LNG.
